08/01/09 - visiting Fremont, huzzah!

Cheers to Maggie for the ride back to Dublin, saved me at least $15. This being the second time, I guess I'm now obligated to kill on her behalf. Ironically enough, I'll be back in Livermore tomorrow morning on my way back to Davis. Computer swap meet with my dad. I used to hate them a lot as a kid, but I guess as a slightly fatter kid I think I can find ways to entertain myself.

Spent the rest of the afternoon with the parents/shopping. Bought groceries for the next month and a half, some $200 spent in one fell swoop. Guess no Chrome messenger bag for me this quarter :/ I'm down to a single fully functional backpack, all others are developing very serious tears in straps that just scream catastrophic failure.

I wish I knew what it was that's making these break on me so easily. I sometime do carry a lot in them, and riding around Davis doesn't exactly subject them tot he smoothest of rides.

Anyways, some random photos I snapped at some random asian store near Lion's supermarket. What the hell is with this mug?

Summer in Davis...finals week

The mind tends to wander enough during finals week. It's so vogue to put off studying that you have to do till the last possible day. But combine that with the restlessness already present during a late night cram-fest (the exam's on Thursday, so not a real cramfest), and you have these photos I took around the apartment.

Stuff around the house right now:

1. Around any finals week you'll find scribblings on the mirror. Not the ramblings of an axe murderer..per-se. Equations...maps...pictures..just stuff that someone (me) has to memorize at this very moment. Not having a big whiteboard (as there are many littering the office) leads me to write on any glossy surface available to me.

2. To say dishes go by the wayside is an understatement.

3. Chinese take out and/or pizza begins to accumulate in the fridge as the act of cooking becomes a major thorn in one's side. I usually go the pizza route, just cause it lasts longer.

4. I've turned my personal laptop almost completely into a work laptop. It works out well for commuting by bike and especially during these hot hot hot summers. I need to put in a request for an actual work laptop though so that this may go back to being a party laptop. For...laptop parties. I've also found that having multiple monitors can severely diminish one's productivity. Having this one screen is not only awesome looking for it's elegance, but is also very functional.

Though it doesn't compare to someone's massive Apple behemoth. Not naming names Garry. Though frankly, a screen as big as that would scare me more than arouse me.

5. It's the gang of mini figurines I've accumulated since the start of college. Their poses will vary throughout the year, ranging from promiscuous to not so promiscuous.

6. We(Thomas, technically) owns an xBox 360. Too bad every game we have for it is severely flawed in one way or another. Halo 3 is NOT FUN. It's singleplayer is trivial, and its multiplayer matchmaking system is INFURIATING.

7. If you see this cat in your house, you have to ask, why is James living at my house.

8. I recently came into owning a complete Shimano 6400 Ultegra grouppo, with wheelset and crankset. Unfortunately, for lack of time/energy, these wonderfully functional and cosmetically pleasing road bike parts go by the wayside.

9. I recently came to own these very very orange shoes. The surprising part is that they're Steve Maddens! They also give me a 1 inch lift. That's right bitches...5'8".

10. My latest of bikes. No name, just the 'other' Trek. Shimano 300/400 mixed Exage group. It's my commuter and she does a fine job of filling that role in my life. I'm sad to say I've logged more miles on this bike than Betty for the last month. Sigh.

11. Thanks to Mr. Mykytyn (younger Mykytyn's pop), we now have reading material of slightly higher class than the regular Maxim...or Cosmo...You can find stacks of them here in the living room, and in the downstairs bathroom.

foldable bike helmet: facepalm.

if it was made of metal it'd be a cool cookie cutter FOR YOUR BRAIN when you get hit by a bus.

I am trying to get 2 tickets to the Nationals vs. Red Sox on Thursday, June 25th. I'm willing to pay up to $40.
From Mike Partlow to **********@**********.org

Hello, I do not have tickets to the Nationals, but I do have a video tape of my 7-year-old's little league team game last week. He plays for the Arby's Allstars, and they beat the Smith Hardware Little Leaguers. I am sure it will be way more entertaining than watching the Nationals get their ass whooped for the 49th time this season.

Fuck yourself, asshole.

Austin, my 7-year-old son was on the computer and he read your very offensive e-mail. Now he is going around telling everyone to "fuck themselves." Me and my wife tried to raise him to be a kid who doesn't curse, but thanks to your profanity, he thinks it is okay. I demand an apology from you.

From austin ******* to Me

You want my apology? Go fuck yourself.

From Mike Partlow to austin *******

I did have the tickets; I was just messing around with you. They were good seats - 10 rows back from third base. I was going to sell them both for $30. I would rather burn them, however, if you don't apologize. If you do apologize, the tickets will be yours.

From Mike Partlow to austin *******

I'm waiting...

From austin ******* to Me

I'm sorry about your kid.

From Mike Partlow to austin *******

Hah, what a sucker. I made you look like little bitch in front of my 7-year-old son. I don't actually have any tickets. Thanks for helping me teach my son a lesson about how not to keep your dignity.

Mike

4 hour commutes, random photos

How long does it take to get to Palo Alto from Davis by car? About two hours.

How long does it take to get to Palo Alto by Train? About 4 hours.

There goes my morning.

Some random photos:
1. Some Palantir swag. Yes, that does indeed say "Funshine". Yes, I do wear it.
2. My lair, in the basement of the library.
3/4. Snapped on the bus, cool views not viewable from the bridge in a sedan.
5. It's hard to make out, but it basically says EVERYTHING in Garry's apartment complex could give you cancer. Fantastic.
6. I dub them, reversesed-flop-chop-bullhorns. The new in thing with the in crowd of in people and stuff.

Tour De France: Stage 1

I guess tennis fans go to Wimbledon. Sadly, I am not in Monaco, or France. Sigh. But here are some cool pictures I pulled from VeloNews. Even if you're not a roadie, I'm sure you'll appreciate the fact that these are not the bikes you learned to ride when you were 8.

edit: note the Scott has the massive chainring and is sporting shimano di2. i think this is my favorite bike out of the bunch by far.
